All around the tourist destination in Beijing and Shanghai these hair bands were a common sight. However, I did not come across any locals wearing these hairbands on the streets.

Forbidden City does not need any introduction. It is an imposing peace of architecture that is rich in history, and it is highly popular tourist destination. That means we really had to fight our way through the crowds. We were in Beijing just for 3 day (had to cut short our trip due to very high pollution levels). The day we visited Forbidden City the PSI (Pollution Standard Index) showed the air quality just below hazardous, hence we decided to wear the masks and definitely the experience didn’t remain enjoyable.
Traditionally Chinese rooftops are quite typical. The patterns and the number of animal figures at the corner of the rooftops suggest the importance of the building. These are often made of glazed ceramic and form an outward marching procession.
Tiananmen Square has great cultural significance, as it was the site of several important events in Chinese history. However, China has achieved the impossible of making some parts of history irrelevant. Today Tiananmen Square is buzzing with local and international tourists. Definitely a must visit place. It is advisable to be careful and watch our belongings. Just like any other popular tourist destinations pickpockets surround this place.
Apparently, for almost a week due to high pollution the visibility at The Great Wall was hardly 15 meters, and most of the tourist came back disappointed. We decided to take a chance and booked a day tour. Thankfully, overnight rain cleared up the haze. We got to see the beautiful scenery. Most of the tours reach past 9:30am. By the time you reach up the wall, the sun gets pretty harsh. Moreover, they shelters are available only after a long walk. Hence, Carrying an umbrella and plenty of water is a good idea.

I really enjoyed the visit to Temple of heaven / Tiantan Park. It gives you an opportunity to meet the locals and especially the retired citizens. During the morning and evening lots of people come and spend time with their friends along the long corridor leading to the Hall of Prayer in the park. They enjoy various activities like playing cards, Mahjong, dancing etc.
